Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for Rohtang Pass?

Yes. Rohtang is capped at 1,200 vehicles a day and the permit is issued online against the vehicle and the date. We apply for it, but the quota fills and the pass shuts for weather with no notice — which is why no itinerary here treats Rohtang as guaranteed. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu is the reliable alternative.

When does Himachal get snow?

Late December through February at Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie and Narkanda. Manali usually gets the first proper fall around Christmas. If snow is the reason for the trip, January is the safest month; December is a gamble people often lose.

How long is the road journey from Delhi?

Delhi to Shimla is about 8 hours, Delhi to Manali 12 to 14, Delhi to Dharamshala about 11. The overnight Volvo covers most of that while you sleep. Where an itinerary has a very long driving day, it says so plainly.

Is Himachal good in the monsoon?

July and August bring landslides on the Chandigarh–Manali highway and on the Kullu valley roads, and the views are usually in cloud. Tirthan and Dharamshala hold up better than the Manali side. We are honest at booking about which routes we would not run in that window.

Which trip suits a family with elderly parents?

Shimla and Kufri, or Dharamshala and Dalhousie. Both keep the walking short and the altitude modest. Avoid the Kinnaur, Parvati Valley and Hampta itineraries — those involve long mountain drives and steep ground.
